The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina is made of a dark blue field, with a yellow right triangle separating the blue field, and a line of white five-pointed stars with a half star at the beginning and end of the line. The line of stars stretches on the side of the triangle from top to bottom.
Meaning of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Flag
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country in south-eastern Europe. The blue color in its flag represents the connection to the United Nations. It was modified to be darker blue to represent Europe. The half stars also symbolize the infinite extension of the European connection from top to bottom. The yellow triangle on the flag carries a double meaning. The three points of the triangle stand for the three ethnicities in the country which are the Croats, the Serbs, and the Bosnians. It also represents the geographical location and shape of the country.
History of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Flag
Bosnia and Herzegovina did not have a flag of its own. It was part of the Communist Yugoslavia from 1946 till 1992. Bosnia and Herzegovina proclaimed independence in 1992 and did not have a flag of its own. A coat of arms with six fleurs-de-lis, and a white band that cut the coat of arms diagonally was used on white background between 1992 and 1998. The flag was rejected by Croats and Serbs as the country slipped into civil war, claiming that it represents only the Bosnians. The current flag was not adopted until 1998.
