Meaning of the Kyrgyzstan Flag
The red field represents the Kyrgyz people’s fortitude and resilience. It also symbolizes strength and determination to overcome adversity. The sun with rays is a symbol of peace and prosperity. It reflects the aspirations of Kyrgyz people for a bright and prosperous future. The tunduk, or the wooden top of the yurt, which is the traditional Kirgiz house, is displayed in the center of the flag. It represents the unity of the community and pride in national heritage, it also represents the universe. The sun’s 40 rays represent the 40 Kyrgyz tribes unified by the epic hero Manas.
History of the Kyrgyzstan Flag
Kyrgyzstan was an autonomous republic in 1926. Then it became part of the Soviet Union in 1936. In 1953, the red Soviet flag was used with blue and white horizontal stripes. Kyrgyzstan proclaimed its independence on August 31, 1991, but the soviet flag was used until 1992. The flag of Kyrgyzstan was adopted on 3 March 1992 by the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan. In 2023, the president signed a decree to change the shape the rays from wavy to straight. The new flag was carefully designed to represent the culture of Kyrgyzstan and its citizens.
