Meaning of the Liberian Flag

The 11 stripes represent the eleven people who signed the Declaration of Independence. The blue square represents the African continent. The five-pointed star symbolizes freedom and independence. It also signifies the hope and aspirations of the Liberian people towards a brighter future.

History of the Liberian Flag

Liberia was established at the beginning of the 19th century by the American Colonization Society, a movement that worked on sending freed slaves back to Africa. They bought some lands and established a colony, giving it the name Liberia. Liberia started to grow and expand and had its own flag in 1827, the flag had 13 white and red stripes, a blue square at the canton, and a white cross on the blue square. In 1847, the freedmen declared the independence of Liberia. The flag was modified. To symbolize the liberation of the colony, the white cross was replaced by a white star, and the number of stripes was reduced from thirteen to eleven to indicate the signatories that signed the independence declaration. The flag survived for a century and a half and was never changed since it was officially adopted.
