Meaning of the Flag of Qatar
The Flag of Qatar has the maroon color that represents the culture and heritage of the country which was a center for purple dye taken from a certain type of shellfish. The maroon color also distinguishes the flag from that of Bahrain. The nine serrated points symbolize Qatar as the ninth member of the reconciled Emirates in the wake of Britain’s treaties of 1916. The white color represents peace.
History of the Flag of Qatar
As Britain was interested in strengthening relationships with Arab Sheikdoms in the Persian Gulf, Qatar became a British protectorate in the 19th century. In 1932, Britain suggested that Qatar should have a flag to represent it. The flag of Qatar was bicolored, although it was not official. The maroon color was chosen to distinguish the flag from those of neighboring countries, and the white stripe edge was serrated with diamonds between the serrated points, and the name of the country written in white on the maroon background. In 1960, the ruler of Qatar Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani removed the diamonds and the country’s name from the flag and kept the maroon stripe as well as the white serrated stripe. When Qatar gained independence from Britain and joined the United Nations in 1971, the current flag was adopted.
