History of the Flag of Wales

The use of the dragon as a symbol of Wales dates back to many centuries ago.  The dragon gained popularity during the 5th and 10th centuries across Britain. The first recorded use of the dragon as a symbol of Wales was in 820. It is related to the 12th-century legend of Merlin, where two sleeping dragons colored white and red, wake up to fight, symbolizing the struggle between Welsh (Red) and English (White). The dragon is linked to legends of war and battles. When the Tudor Dynasty held the English Throne from 1485 to 1606, the dragon was still present and symbolized their monarchy and noble Welsh origins. The green and white stripes were added to the flag by Henry VII, as a symbol of his monarchy. The flag of Wales became popular at the beginning of the 20th century. The flag became official in 1956 and is now flown in sports events and official buildings as well as on national days.
