History of the Burkina Faso flag
Burkina Faso is a small, landlocked country in West Africa. It was a French colony until 1960. Before August 4, 1983, Burkina Faso was called Upper Volta. As Thomas Sankara seized control of the country, he changed all its symbols to indicate the establishment of a new country. Changing the name of the country, its motto, and its flag gave people hope for a new and fresh start free from corruption and colonization. The old flag that was adopted in 1959 which had white, black, and red colors to represent the three Volta river branches was replaced by the new red and green flag with the yellow star. The new flag was officially adopted in 1984.
