History of the Danish Flag

According to the legend, the flag of Denmark fell from heaven in the year 1219 as a sign of support for King Valdemar II in his battle against the pagan Estonians. The flag was used in wars and for military purposes only and was not exclusive to Denmark. It was used by many states during the Crusades of the 11th to 13 centuries. The Danes had their constitution in the middle of the 19th century, and they started to use the flag as a sign of citizenship in addition to its military purposes. It was first forbidden for personal use at the beginning of the 19th century, but then it was allowed again in 1854, so the Danes could use it on their personal properties. The Danish people use the flag in their everyday life, and the “Dannebrog” as they call it is a significant cultural symbol in addition to its being a national emblem. The flag is one of the oldest in the world since it dates back to 800 years ago, and it was commemorated in 2019 when the Danes celebrated its 800th anniversary. The flag has never changed since its adoption in Denmark.
