The flag of Lebanon has two red horizontal stripes on top and bottom of the flag, with a white stripe in the middle that is wider than the two red stripes. In the middle of the flag, there is a green cedar tree.
Meaning of the Lebanese Flag
The red color represents the blood that was shed for the independence of the country. The white color represents purity and the white snowy peaks of the Lebanese mountains. The green cedar tree in the middle symbolizes the Cedar of Lebanon which has existed since ancient times and was mentioned in the bible and many ancient myths. It symbolizes the power, unity, and history of the Lebanese people.
History of the Lebanese Flag
Lebanon was ruled by different powers throughout its history, and had different banners that changed with the change of its rulers. After WWI, the state of Greater Lebanon was established under the French Mandate for Syria and Lebanon, which was established by the League of Nations in 1920. The flag used then was a French tricolor with a cedar tree on the white stripe. The Lebanese started their struggle for independence during WWII. In 1943, the National Pact was established to address political representation among the various religious groups in Lebanon. and decided to change the design of the flag. Henri Pharaon designed the new flag, which adopted the bicolor red and white with the cedar tree in the middle. They proclaimed independence from France in the same year, and the French troops left Lebanon. The Flag was officially adopted by the parliament on December 7th, 1943.
