History of Montenegro Flag
Montenegro proclaimed its independence in 1878 and its independence flag was blue, red, and white inspired by the Russian flag. After WWI, Montenegro became part of a larger kingdom that was later called Yugoslavia. Italy occupied Yugoslavia from 1941 to 1943. Yugoslavia was dissolved after WWII, then it was allowed to reestablish a federation that continued from 1946 to 1993. Montenegro remained in the Yugoslavia federation and was called Serbia and Montenegro. In 2004, Montenegro adopted its current flag of red background, yellow border, and coat of arms, and as it proclaimed independence in 2006, the flag was officially adopted.
