The coat of arms features an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake. Oak and laurel branches encircle the eagle. The ribbon with the national colors is also wrapped around the bottom of the emblem.

Meaning of the Mexican Flag

The green stripe represents independence, hope and victory. The white stripe represents purity and unity among different communities and ethnicities of Mexican society.  It represents the bloodshed during the fight for independence and the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom. The emblem in the center of the flag represents Aztec legend that recalls establishing the city of what is known now as Mexico City based on a vision that led the Aztec people to find an eagle standing on a cactus and holding a serpent as a location to establish their new city.

History of the Mexican Flag

The images of eagles were used during the pre-Hispanic period and were popular in the Aztec civilization. The Aztec Empire was defeated and Mexico was conquered by Spain in 1521. The War of Independence broke three hundred years later. At the beginning of the 19th century when Mexico was fighting for independence from Spain.  Rebels formed an army and fought under a flag that incorporated green, white, and red. In 1821, Mexico proclaimed independence from Spain, and the Mexican flag was raised. The flag was modestly changed since then, but it remained the same for 200 years.
