History of the Flag of South Sudan
South Sudan was part of Sudan. As a Christian Ethnicity that felt discriminated against, the South Sudanese went into a bloody war to become independent. The flag of South Sudan was created in the 1990s when the country was still amid the struggle for independence. A peace agreement was reached in 2005, and the country became independent in 2011. The flag that was designed to represent South Sudan before independence was retained and became the official flag of the country. It was hoisted for the first time on July 9, 2011.
